Effects of the Elderly Health Promotion Behavior Program on Motivation, Health Behaviors, and Depression

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to identify the effects of the Health Promotion Behavior Programs (HPBP) on motivation, performance of health behavior and depression among the elderly living in a rural area. The subjects consisted of 17 elderly who participated in the HPBP and 35 elderly who participated in the HPBP and 35 elderly who did not participate in the program.
The study results are as follows:
1. Program participants reported higher levels of total motivation after HPBP than the nonparticipants. Perceived barriers were significantly lower for the program participants that the nonparticipants at the post-test.
2. Overall performance of health behaviors was not significantly different beteen both groups. The program participants reported better performance in most health behaviors at the post-test, but the results failed to reach at a statistically significant level. Health behavior program participants reported higher performance in exercise domain of health behaviors than the nonparticipants at the post-test.
3. The program participants reported significantly lower levels of depression at the post-test.
In conclusion, the study partly supported the effects of the HPBP on motivation, health behavior, and depression. Further study with a longitudinal design is suggested to verify the long-term effects of HPBP among elderly member in the rural area.
